Design as a form of communication

Kristina Ivković

Kristina Ivković is a talented designer and painter. As she says herself, goals set and the intensity of love towards fashion, work and success separates her from others. Born in Subotica, she studied design and the University in Zagreb where she gained adequate knowledge and experience to realize her goal – conquer the world. She admits to feeling happy when she spots a beautiful fashion detail on the street, because fashion is for her a way of life, creation, freedom and happiness. She also revealed that she will fight for her dreams as long as she is happy and enjoying life.

CA: How difficult is it to succeed in Serbia and what most blocks success?

We all know how difficult it is to succeed in Serbia, and achieving success as an artist or fashion designer – is even harder. Here, but in neighboring Croatia and in the entire Balkan region, fashion is not considered a serious vocation, so not much is invested in the textile and fashion industry. People have lost the habit of purchasing national brands and they rush towards foreign ones that are imposed and mass-produced.

CA: What does a designer need in order to single himself out and succeed?

First of all, a will to create, then much work, and lastly talent, which is not such a deciding factor. Through will and work, knowledge is acquired that can be directed and adjusted to the demands and needs of consumers, when speaking of “prêt-a-porter” or wearable fashion. On the other hand, its possible to express creativity and ideas through “haute couture” or high fashion, but even the most famous designer in the world cannot make a living from this kind of fashion, as it is purely an expression of the artist and his freedom. So I feel that designers should begin with wearable fashion, to create functional and wearable clothing that can be worn by masses at large.

CA: What do your creations and paintings represent, where do you find inspiration?

My creations are a form of expression and thinking conveyed through emotions. Creating for me is casting out colorful happiness, or artistic drawing on paper, or buying an interesting material that will find its place in some collection. I always start with the question, what is it that I would love to wear and what would I feel good in? Art is a return to childhood, daydreaming, imagining, freedom. I find inspiration for creating in everything beautiful that surrounds me, in colors and things that make me happy. My first collection is a union of happiness and color. It will be shown in November of this year at show “Modni Ormar” (Fashion Closet) in Zagreb.

CA: What did you have to give up for success and realizing your dreams?

Depending on to which extent we will give up certain important or less important things, is the extent of our chances to make progress in realizing our dreams. Perhaps the biggest thing I gave up is a social life that is in the process of creating unavoidably neglected. I don’t have time for all the things that young people enjoy, such as long coffees and nights out, but when I think about it – I’m not too sorry. I spend much time at college working and trying to always be better.

CA: How possible and permitted is it for artists and creators today to be individuals?

Design is commercial, limited by functionality and market demands, so the creator is limited in his own self-expression. Design has a specific purpose and cannot be “lartpourlartistic” (art for the sake of art), because it has to fulfill set conditions and therefore hinders individual expression. It’s positive that design is an applied line of work, whereas art is not. Designed clothes are worn every day, the design of clothes affects us, alters our surroundings and can create a positive environment because through fashion design, in other words through the clothes we wear, we visually communicate with the environment.

CA: How do you perceive the woman for whom you create and for whom your models are intended?

In a woman I wish to safeguard femininity and sexiness, but in no way vulgarity. I would like for the woman that wears my clothing to be positive, striking, but not overbearing. Life should be enjoyed through wardrobe, a woman should find herself in the appropriate clothes and so find happiness. For this reason I wish to create for everyone that wants to be different, to step out of the everyday monotony and to feel good in the clothes she wears.

CA: Šta predstavljaju tvoje kreacije i slike, i u čemu pronalaziš inspiraciju?
