VIVA VOX CHOIR

DU HAST acapella

They don’t use guitars, drums, pianos. Their voices are their instruments. The members of the famous choir from Zemun, conducted by Jasmina Lovren, reveal for the Creative Art magazine how an ordinary high school choir reached the popularity

How long does the Viva Vox Choir exist and how did you come up with the idea to form a choir of that kind?

What Viva Vox is today, from the beginning it was just a high school choir. Little by little we threw in elements of pop music. The oldest members of Viva Vox, after completing the fourth grade of high school, expressed a desire to continue working on the choir, which is exactly what has happened. We were a part of the Ensemble "Branko Radičević" for two years, then in 2005 we started working independently and we went our own way.

How many members does the Viva Vox Choir have?

Around thirty, but people come and go from Viva Vox. There are always ups and downs, even regarding the number of members. But now the number of members is just right.

How do you select songs for your performances?

In the last two years, we have turned to more popular repertoire, mostly pop and rock. Previously, a conductor made the selection of songs, but since we have started singing popular music, the choir members select the songs. They know what the audience will like. Some songs simply self-impose. Often someone hears a song and things that it would be a "big hit", then we do our version of the song and that's how we get the next song in our repertoire.

How did it come to cappella version of the song "Du Hast" by the band Rammstein?

It is the choir music that we perform without any instrumental accompaniment, imitating the musical instruments. The idea to do "Du Hast" arose spontaneously. Someone came with this idea to the rehearsal, we thought it would be interesting to try who would imitate which instrument and we started. We put everything on paper, we turned it into notes and we realized that this may sound good. Most peculiar of all, with this song, is that most of us were not aware of how good it would turn out until the concert. When we first heard our voices on the microphone, we were confused because we had previously heard ourselves only in rehearsals, in a room without a sound.

Where did you perform?

After our important concert in Dom Omladine in May, we were guests on the Show with Zoran Kesiæ, on TV station Prva. I think that it was a very important performance, because from that moment on many people have heard of us, which is confirmed by numerous invitations to perform. It was really nice in Gorica Popovic play last year. We spent three nights with our outstanding theater actors and it was great. We didn’t have many performances outside Belgrade, although we had two small "excursions" to Gorocka and Pula. This year we will have a show in Novi Sad, in Trg osloboðenja, at the opening of the International Choir Festival, and we look forward to it. Thanks to the popularity on the Internet, the invitations started coming from different towns in Serbia, where they usually plan to invite local young people, trying to revive the culture. It makes us very happy.

How long does one of your performances last?

An hour and a half, mostly, although it depends on the agreement. For our part, we could sing all day and night. On the other hand, sometimes it lasts up to twenty minutes.

Future projects?

The current repertoire remains, but we are preparing something new as well. We are preparing the annual concert traditionally held before the New Year, probably again in Dom Omladine. We are also hoping for a chance to perform in some large hall abroad. Until then, there is a festival in Novi Sad, performances in Aranðelovac, Kragujevac, Smederevo, Zajeèar, Kikinda, at Kolarac and Hyatt. There are plans to record the songs professionally, in a studio because now each clip is without “retouches”.

VIVA VOX CHOIR

Gde ste sve nastupali?

Malo smo nastupali van Beograda, mada smo imali dve manje „ekskurzije“ do Gorocke i Pule.

S druge strane, nekada traje i dvadeset minuta.

Budući projekti?

Ostaje dosadašnji repertoar, ali spremamo i nešto novo. Godišnji koncert spremamo tradicionalno, pred Novu godinu, najverovatnije ponovo u Domu Omladine.
