ZDUHAČ

means an adventure

The audience is pretty much fed up with screenplays describing dissatisfied, poor people who are crippled by the country they live in, unsuccessfully trying to feel a small fragment of happiness each person is entitled to by birth. The audience is tired of heinous scenes of violence, blood and child abuse on the screen, as well as of going out of the cinema darkness, filled with even more darkness in their hearts. Recording political corruption, poverty or demonstrations on celluloid, we unnecessarily confirm their existence, and thus reducing the aesthetic value of the film, since we present things which, simply- are not for art.

Among a great number of films of such topic, from time to time, a timid attempt of dark reality disregard, in anticipation of fine art, appears. The last such attempt, a film by Predrag Milinkovic “Zduhac Means an Adventure”, had its first run on April 5, this year    in the Sava Center. The courage of this film has put its creator among the rare moviemakers who are ready to ignore social problems for the sake of an essential goal- fun with the point.

After several successful titles, such as “As Cool as you Please” and “An Obituary for Escobar”, Milinkovic made his new film thanks to successful production cooperation between “Aquarius Ogilvy” from Banja Luka and “Recreation Production” from Belgrade, and in co-production of RTRS. For the most part of it, the film was made in Banja Luka and Trebinje, because of the surrounding that the film crew used as set design, so that, according to the director, “the director of photography did not have to work additionally on photography and its composition, because the scenery was perfect”.

In technological sense, the film follows modern tendencies of works, made not by a camcorder, but camera. Speaking about that experience, the creative producer of the film, Bane Antovic, revealed us that the film was completely made by Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera.

“It was impossible to make a successful and complete transfer on a 35 millimeter celluloid”, Antovic explains. “Since ‘Zduhac’ is the ‘road movie’ which has plenty of aerial recordings, recordings on rafting, in a moving car, then records of falls and so on, it was much easier to record with a digital camera than a camcorder. Unlike the traditional recording techniques, such recording requires a very compact team of film makers. On the other hand, we needed fewer people for the recording, and less time for the whole work”. The result is the film which, in genre terms, can easily be placed in the sphere of “road” film, with a romantic-comic touch.

What sets the scene of the film “Zduhac means an adventure” are two teenagers: shy, but self-confident Nenad from Banja Luka, who, after a long time, meets his cousin from Belgrade, Uros, a typical city charmer, whose essential vocation is to charm girls. The role of Nenad is played by Zlatan Vidovic, and the role of Uros by Vujadin Milosevic. Setting out to “Demofest” (a pop-rock demo music festival, translator’s note) in Banja Luka, they meet Marija, an independent girl of a rock sensibility, who Uros presents as his girlfriend, although she is not so, and Sindi, a self-indulgent actress, who takes a broken nail as a reason for several weeks’ depression. The two of them are also going to Banja Luka in order to act in an advertisement, which should be made by a college dropout director, Zarko, who uses his job as a way to come on to girls, with a help of a neurotic producer, Sava, who tries discreetly to save the day. Their roles are played by Nikola Kojo and Marko Zivic. At the same time , Maksa, a cunning manager and a petty crook, ready to everything, drives two teenagers in a van, to the mentioned festival in Banja Luka, joined by a band which, although supposed to appear at the same manifestation, ends in places which, to put it mildly, are not appropriate for the musicians like them. There are also scouts, models, custom officers, nurses, rap stars, hosts, security and the drunks from pubs in the film, which certainly affects its dynamic and pace.

The film title draws attention to the unusual term “zduhac”, a mythological creature which fights evil in dreams. Just that mythological reference gives the film a profundity that sets it apart from the sphere of a superficial and prone to fun teenage achievement. In connection with that, the director once said the following: “I like films which are amusing and funny, but which, at the same time, must also have ‘a certain thing’, which makes them different and gives them a profound touch, something that makes you not forget the film as soon as you leave the cinema”.

All roles are equally important in “Zduhac”, and that is why it is almost impossible to decide who the main character is. Likewise, there are many parallel actions, none of which can be called the main one. In spite of that, a love story between Marija and Nenad who find common inclinations in crazy circumstances they are thrown, stands out. On the screen there is an authentic chemistry between them, which makes us support their love till the end of the film.

“Zduhac” is full of music and authentic clips from “Demofest” in Banja Luka. What will certainly raise it on the level of a cult film are interpretations of folk hits in rock tunes, done by an actor, Marko Gvero. The originally film music composer is Dragoljub Markovic, a former member of a band “Nothing but speech pathologists” and the album producer of a well-known rapper, Marcelo. The music of the bands “E-play”, “Popecitelj”, “Sopot” and the others is also used in the film.

If there is something this brave film can be blamed for, that would certainly be, from time to time, unconvincing acting of Vujadin Milosevic, who plays the role of Nenad’s cousin from Belgrade. The role of self-confident, chubby charmer Uros, still very demanding for the contradictions of his character, would have been better for a more charismatic and temperamental actor than Milosevic, who, unconvincingly tried to cause by force a comic effect by a learned skill. Besides, the dialogues lack the authentic Balkans charm, the ace card of our comedies, as well as the phrases that would aspire to become a part of an urban vocabulary and cultural heritage of the coming generations. It would be unfair to say that you will leave the cinema without a pair of striking phrases you will repeat as a joke in a company, but the strength of this film is not so in its actor’s dialogue as in the action with unpredictable turnovers, which is unusually creatively thought up.

The biggest praise is due to a very precise role assignment, and it must be said that it is one of the most demanding problems in a film without the main role. The famous actors, such as Nikola Kojo, Srdjan Todorovic, Nikola Pejakovic, Marko Zivic and the others, spontaneously draw attention to themselves and raise the film on the higher level. However, the director expertly avoided a trap of engaging high-sounding actors’ names, where less known actors are “eaten” by the charisma of the “bigger fish” of our acting scene, by a level-headed choice of actors and by building a plot which makes a viewer interested in each character particularly. We are not only interested in what Srdjan Todorovic is going to say, but in what young and striking Jelisaveta Orasanin, who will definitely be a future big star, is going to do.

Nenada tumači Zlatan Vidović, a Uroša Vujadin Milošević. Njihove uloge tumače Nikola Kojo i Marko Živić.

„Zduhač“ obiluje muzikom i autentičnim snimcima s banjalučkog „Demofesta”.
